“TANGO” Origin of name

Origin of nameThe origin of the tango, a cultural phenomenon that includes dance, music, song and poetry, is as fascinating as legendary. Just as uncertain is its origin, is also the legendary origin of the name. Among the various hypotheses seems that the term indicates the port of Africa where slaves gathered traffickers, others are traced back to the deformation of the term "tambor" (drum) by the blacks that pronunciavano "tangò."
The philologist

Ricardo Rodríguez, thanks to the study of languages of the slaves brought in Argentina, says that most came from regions in the current Congo Gulf of Guinea and southern Sudan. For these people the word meant tangó 'enclosed space', 'circulo' and 'any private space in which to enter should ask permission'. And the same word tangó indicated for negrieri Spaniards the space where slaves were locked up and the place where they were sold.
The lack of documentation about it does not allow a definitive answer but appeared clear the black roots of this phenomenon.
