The American artist is a piano prodigy. From the jazz scene in the 90s, it demonstrates the extent of its artistic qualities of jazz or pieces revisited directory rock. In this exercise, Mehldau has fared well. It might even welcome the move for two reasons: it increases the catalog of jazz standards and brings fans intrigued rock to jazz. For that reason alone, Mehldau important. On this album is still one problem: the risk of indigestion. A double disc, too: it detects time low, it annoys them, and a final choice of the best titles compiled together on a single disc would have proved far more sensible and would have been enough to remind all Mehldau’s talent and his unparalleled mastery of the art of the trio.

It is far from the legendary swing interpretations of standards chosen for this record. We can therefore continue to expect from an album Robin McKelle riskier, more daring, the orchestration can be more original. An album on which it will at last get rid of the influence of his elders to use his voice and reach its true personality. Meanwhile, ‘Modern Antique’ remains a hard and rather trite little interest.
